Are Fishnets In Or Out?

Author: Cassie Hughes

Over the years, there has been an on again, off again love affair with fishnets stockings. At times, fishnets have been considered to make a statement that most women don't want to make and therefore were only worn at night clubs or in the bedroom. Well things have changed once again and fishnets are back on the scene. Women are even wearing them in office settings, especially in companies that are involved in advertising, media, and arts. However, it is still frowned upon at power meetings, banks, industrial and consulting companies where the dress code is more controlled.

Why are fishnets considered more suggestive than regular hosiery when the only difference in the two are the pattern? Fishnets do not reveal any more of women's bodies than regular hosiery nor do they accentuate a special part of their body. Perhaps it's the reputation that fishnets once had. At one time, only prostitutes were bold enough to wear shocking fishnet hosiery. So in the minds of some narrow minded people, they continue to think in terms of naughty instead of sexy. But instead of being intolerant of new ideas, we should be looking at fishnet stockings from a fashion perspective. Fishnets spice up most any outfit. You'll get more attention when you add fishnet hosiery to an outfit than when you use regular hosiery. Perhaps that's because now fishnets bring to mind sexy fashion models in the lingerie world?

A question that is often pondered is why women would forgo such feminine items as fishnet stockings and sexy apparel for more manly clothing. It seems that women are being forced, although not visibly to look like men in order to compete for fame and power in the working world. It's sad to say that most women who choose feminity over their careers have suffered tremendously. Is it because they are not like everyone else in the boardroom and are not taken seriously by their male colleagues?

The most common color for fishnets is still black. However, some more daring women have tried out other colors, but only in night club and bedroom settings rather than in the work place. Some of the leading designers, Anna Sui, Helmut Lang, and Vivienne Westwood have even introduced a variety of colors into their shows. The most popular colors being off-white, pink, magenta, brown, and red.

If fishnet stockings interest you, check with your personnel department at work and find out if there are any restrictions. Ask specifically about fishnet stockings as some companies have policies banning suggestive clothing and can use this against you. Embrace this new world despite the raised eyebrows. Dress to impress, you are worth it!
